Focus Magazine’s Bold Move

Tough times call for bold moves. Focus Magazine is trying something interesting for its issue 21.

Focus Fine Art Photography Magazine

No its not the content. Focus is taking its issue 21 to Print. Yes good old fashioned print. This seems a bold move in a day in age when print magazine companies are going out of business left and right. I spent some time perusing Apple’s app store and reading some of the comments on the Photography Magazines gone digital. Can you say unimpressed? Out of the 30 or so out there I think I stumbled across 3 with a average user rating of 4 stars.

The President and Publisher David Spiva, provided an insightful read explaining the move. Mr . Spiva understands that in the world of Fine Art some times tradition triumphs trend. He descries the process of this print edition as being “their highest quality print magazine ever”. This special edition will be using stochastic dot screen printing on a new European gloss on a heavier paper stock. I’m no expert in magazine printing, but by his description it sounds like this is no ordinary magazine.  By focusing (no pun intended) on quality he’s catering to the more traditional types that have a special appreciation of fine art photography. Snob I am not, but I do question the topic of this special edition. The human form has been a subject in fine art photography since its beginning, so the fact this issue is dedicated to Nudes might be yet another way of reaching those traditionalists. Subject selection is one topic he dose not discuss in the write up.

Needless to say I do appreciate and respect David Spiva’s bold move; however, he does mention this print edition comes with no guarantees and is dependent on the number of editions sold. The plan is to get enough subscribers to print a run in time for shipment by Christmas.  At  $29.95 + S&H for 140+ pages of quality printed Fine Art seems like a good gift for that special person keeping in mind the topic doesn’t offend them. While the plan is to ship to stores you can order a copy by going to www.focusmag.info and click the buy now button from Amazon.com.

P.S.

And no, I have not been asked to promote this in any way shape or form. While roaming the internet in search of places to market my photography (maybe a future post) I ran across this little interesting tid bit and thought I would share. Enjoy!
